On Thursday, November 5th, from 5 - 6 PM in the Student Center Piedmont room, Michael-Scott Staffle, Program Manager of the Boren Awards will be on campus to tell more about this generous scholarship opportunity, and to answer questions about the application process for this national award.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. They focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. The undergraduate scholarships award up to $20,000 for a year of overseas study.

CBYX for Young Professionals Fellowship Accepting Applications

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is currently accepting applications from students and recent graduates who are interested in living, studying, and interning in Germany on a full-year, funded fellowship. CBYX is sponsored by the US and German governments for applicants in all career fields between the ages of 18-24, and does not require any prior German language knowledge! Applicants in business, vocational, technical, engineering, scientific, and agricultural fields are especially encouraged to apply.

75 participants are annually awarded the CBYX fellowship to spend a year studying and working in their career fields while completely immersed in German language and culture. Find more information at www.CBYX.info.

The CBYX for Young Professionals fellowship includes:

• two months of intensive German language training (prior German language knowledge is not required, but preferred)

• four months of study in the participant's career field at a German college or university

• five-month internship in the participant's career field with a German company

• accommodations living with German hosts, in shared apartments, and in student dorms

• transatlantic airfare and monthly food stipends

• health/accident insurance

• various program seminars in the United States and Germany

• support throughout the program year by local program representatives

Eligibility:

• US citizen or permanent resident

• between the ages of 18-24 at the start of the program in July 2010

• high school diploma or equivalent

• clear career goals and some relevant work experience in career field

• strong interest in German and international affairs, and a strong sense of American identity

• flexibility, independence, and diplomacy

Scholarships for study abroad in Japan

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 20 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Spring 2010. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded 950 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Most recently, 68 students from colleges and universities in 29 states received scholarships for study in Japan beginning in the Fall 2009 semester.

The deadline for applications for Spring 2010 scholarships is October 6, 2009. Applicants will be notified of the results by November 25. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese.

Spring 2010 programs are those beginning between January and April 2010 and continuing for at least three months. (Summer program participants are not eligible for Bridging Scholarships.) Students planning to study abroad in Japan beginning in Fall 2010 or for the 2010-2011 academic year should apply in April 2010 for the Fall 2010 scholarships.

Gilman Scholarship launches summer award cycle!

The Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce the launch of a pilot summer award cycle for students participating in summer 2010 study abroad programs. A limited number of awards will be available to students majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field who meet the program's standard eligibility criteria listed below.

· Enrolled as an undergraduate student at a two or four-year U.S. Institution
· United States citizen
· Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
· Participating in a study abroad program that is no less than 4 weeks and no more than an academic year
· Receiving academic credit
· Study in any country not currently under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning or Cuba

Applications are now being accepted online and are due September 23, 2009 (please note the GT campus deadline is earlier than the national deadline in order to allow time for an on-campus review of your application). Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars

The Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars program is a competitive scholarship program that allows undergraduates to conduct independent research in the laboratories of the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering & Bioscience.

The program serves to develop the next generation of leading bioengineering and bioscience researchers by providing a comprehensive research experience for an entire year. The Scholars are mentored by graduate students and postdocs in state-of-the-art laboratories and will develop their own research project. The Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars Program runs from January to
December 2010.

Program Outline

*$1,450 stipend for spring semester work 12+ hrs/week
*$3,000 stipend for summer session work 40+ hrs/week
*$1,450 stipend for fall semester work 12+ hrs/week

Applicant Eligibility Criteria

*Students with at least 45 credit hours as of January 2010, majoring in engineering or the sciences with an interest in bioengineering and/or bioscience research
*A commitment beginning in January of 2010 and concluding at the end of December 2010
*Official university transcript
*Two letters of recommendation
*Students currently enrolled full time at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College or another metro Atlanta area college or university.

Service-Learning Grants

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board has announced grant opportunities for student-led service-learning projects that address five issues: drivers’ safety, access to higher education/closing the achievement gap, financial literacy, natural/societal disaster preparedness, and environmental responsibility. The grants range from $25,000 to $100,000.

Postgraduate Fellowship for Hong Kong PolyU

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is actively recruiting outstanding students worldwide for nomination to a PhD Fellowship Scheme offered by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC). Successful candidates will receive from the PolyU and RGC a generous package of approximately USD114,000, covering tuition, monthly stipend and annual conference travel allowance.
