Gilman Scholarship Application Now OPEN for Summer 2012, Fall 2012 and Academic Year 2012-2013

The Gilman Scholarship Program is happy to announce that the online application system is now open for students participating in study abroad programs during either the Summer 2012, Fall 2012 or 2012-2013 Academic Year terms. For more information about the Gilman Scholarship please visit the Gilman website at www.iie.org/gilman.

Summer & Fall 2012 online applications are due March 1, 2012 by 11:59pm CST. The GT campus deadline is February 16, 2012.

For students applying for any academic term (Academic Year, Fall, Spring or Summer) please find the eligibility requirements below:
1. Enrolled as an undergraduate student at a two or four-year U.S. Institution
2. United States citizen
3. Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
4. Participating in a study abroad program that is no less than 4 weeks (28 days) in one country and no more than an academic year
5. Receiving academic credit
6. Study in any country not currently under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning or Cuba

Last Chance to Apply for RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering)

RISE is a summer internship program in Germany for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance.

Freeman-ASIA Summer 2012 Scholarship - Application Now Open

Freeman-ASIA provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Applicants should have a minimum 2.8 GPA. The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Awards of up to $3,000 are available for summer programs. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others.

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarships and Travel Grants

For the sixth consecutive year, ThinkSwiss will select 15 to 20 highly talented and motivated students who are currently enrolled at a U.S. university. Awardees will receive a monthly stipend of $1,000 for a period of up to three months. Scholarships will help fund qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university. The scholarship is open to students of all fields.

Bobby Jones Fellowship Application Deadline, February 1, 2012

The Bobby Jones Fellowship application deadline has been extended to February 1, 2012.

The fellowship provides funding for one Georgia Tech student to pursue a one-year Master's degree program at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and one St. Andrews student to pursue a one-year Master's degree program at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The fellowship is open to Physics or Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Georgia Tech and St. Andrews students who wish to pursue graduate studies in the selected areas of Physics or ECE.

All applicants and interested students are invited to attend an information session on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 6pm in the Undergraduate Studies Resource Room, Clough Commons, Suite 205.

Spring 2012 Glimpse Correspondents Program - DEADLINE EXTENDED

The deadline for the Spring 2012 Glimpse Correspondents Program has been extended to December 20th.

The Glimpse Correspondents Program is an opportunity for writers and photographers who will be living abroad in 2012 to have their work published and recognized in nationally renowned publications. Correspondents receive critical feedback on their writing and photography and develop a portfolio of highly accomplished work. Critically, at a time when many opportunities for emerging writers do not pay, Glimpse Correspondents receive a $600 stipend.

CLS Program Application Now Open!

The 2012 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program application deadline is about a month away – November 15, 2011!

CLS institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. Students may apply for one language, and will be placed at institute sites based on language evaluations after selection. Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu.

The Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars program is a competitive scholarship program that serves to develop the next generation of leading bioengineering and bioscience researchers by providing a comprehensive research experience for a full year. Open to all Atlanta area university students, the program allows undergraduates to conduct independent research in the state-of-the-art laboratories of the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience. Scholars develop their own research project within the term of January to December each year.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals - Application Deadline is December 1

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a yearlong fellowship to study and intern in Germany, is currently accepting applications from your students. CBYX is open to applicants in all career fields without any prior German language knowledge, and is funded by the US and German governments through a grant provided by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961, as amended. The CBYX program covers the costs of and annually provides 75 participants with:

• 2 months intensive German language training in Cologne, Bremen, Radolfzell, or Saarbruecken

• Semester of study at a German University or University of Applied Sciences

• 5-month internship with a German company in the participant's career field

• Homestays with German host families, in shared apartments, and student dorms

• Transatlantic airfare, health insurance, and monthly living expense stipends

• Various seminars in the US and Germany

• Local in-country support throughout the program

CBYX for Young Professionals is open to students in all fields of study, though preference is given to students in vocational, technical, engineering, agricultural, business, and scientific fields. Applicants should have clear career goals and some relevant work experience in their career field, which may include summer, part-time, or internship work. Prior German language knowledge is not required, though it is strongly preferred. Participants must be between the ages of 18-24, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be US citizens or permanent residents.

P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship

Announcing an opportunity for substantial financial support for international female graduate or PhD students. The award is called the International Peace Scholarship (I.P.S.) and it is sponsored by a nonprofit organization called P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization). P.E.O. offers five projects, of which I.P.S. is one.

It is our fondest hope that by helping educate future leaders in other countries we can in some small way foster goodwill, understanding and peace in the world.

The scholarship is up to $10,000 and is renewable one time only. Any current female international student (who has at least one academic year remaining upon receipt of the scholarship in May) is eligible. Also, any newly accepted student, even if she has not yet matriculated, is eligible.

Note that the preliminary application must be filed by December 15th. Applications are available at: www.peointernational.org. Click on the link on the left-hand top of the screen entitled About P.E.O. and its Projects; then International Peace Scholarship Eligibility Form pdf. (Note that the form will become available on August 15th.)

Awards are based on a budget, which the International office uses to determine need. If she qualifies, based on need, P.E.O. International will mail her the full application packet. The budget need not be substantiated until after the student is selected to receive the full application. Selected students submit the full application by January 31st. The scholarship is based not only on need, but also leadership qualities and academics.

BUTEX is now accepting applications for its North American Scholarship Programme 2011/12!

Georgia Tech students are encouraged to apply for Fulbright awards available in 140 countries around the world. Through Fulbright students may 1) do research, 2) a one-year degree program, or 3) be an English teaching assistant.

Seniors and graduate students may apply next fall. Students at all levels are invited to learn about the Fulbright program. Students must be US citizens.

The campus deadline for Fulbright applications is September 16, and students need to work with Dr. Karen Adams this spring (karen.adams@provost.gatech.edu) to begin work on the application. Students are urged to make an appointment with Dr. Adams asap to learn what is needed in a letter of invitation and for preparation of essays.

Study Abroad Scholarships in Turkey for American Minority Students

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) has a diverse array of scholarship programs that support its educational mission. One of these programs provides up to 100 scholarships to African American, Hispanic American and Native American students who choose Turkey as their study abroad destination.

TCA Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 per student:

$2,000 for a semester or year at a Turkish institution.
$1,000 for Turkish language studies at a Turkish institution.
$1,000 for summer programs lasting for more than 4 weeks at a Turkish institution.
$500 for summer programs lasting up to 4 weeks sponsored by US educational institutions or Turkish institutions.
$500 for participants in university/college-sponsored study tours to Turkey.

And these are awarded to college and graduate students who are:

U.S. citizens of African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American ethnic origin.
Enrolled full time, in good standing at an accredited U.S. college or university.
Accepted to a study abroad program or language program at a university in Turkey.
Willing to share experiences in Turkey, TRNC or Bosnia Herzegovina with the TCA community and Diversity Abroad.

Description: This scholarship assists members who participate in a study abroad program.

Scholarships Available: At least ten $1,000 (USD) awards will be presented each year (at least three for the 15 October deadline and at least seven for the 1 April deadline).

Eligibility: Those eligible are undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate members who are currently enrolled in a study abroad program or will be enrolled the academic year immediately following the granting of the award. Boren Scholarship Advising

The GT campus deadline for the 2011-2012 Boren Scholarship is coming up quickly on Wednesday, January 26th. This is the date by which students should have finalized their online application and turned in supporting documents (including letters of reference) to the Office of International Education (Savant Building, suite 211) so that we may complete the campus review by the national deadline of February 10th. South Korea Scholarship Program

CIEE offers an annual spring break scholarship to 75 full-time undergraduate university students to participate in the Korea-US Youth Network. The selection process is highly competitive and students are reminded that only applications that meet all eligibility requirements will be reviewed.

South Korea University Spring Break Program will take place from March 19-26 2011.

All application materials for the South Korea University Spring Break program must be received by the CIEE office by January 14th. Late materials will not be reviewed.

Freeman-ASIA provides financial support to American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad for academic credit during the summer, semester or academic year in one of 15 countries/regions in East and Southeast Asia. Award amounts vary from $3,000 - $7,000 depending on the length of study.

The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Upon their return to the U.S., students are required to promote study in Asia by sharing their experiences with peers on their home campuses and in their communities.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites highly qualified undergraduate students to apply for funding to study, do research and/or internships in Germany. Scholarships are available for students taking part in an organized study abroad program/exchange or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad experience. Funding for a semester or the academic year is offered for 2011/12 (starting in fall 11) and includes a monthly stipend, health insurance and a lump sum for travel. Boren Awards - African Language Initiative

The National Security Education Program African Languages Initiative is now open to both undergraduate and graduate students. This initiative will offer Boren Scholarship and Fellowship applicants the opportunity to apply for additional language training in Bambara, Swahili, Yoruba, or Zulu. Preference will be given to applicants with prior exposure to the respective languages, but prior training is not required.

Specifically, this pilot initiative will provide the opportunity for Scholars and Fellows to enhance their Boren Awards with additional language study in the United States and overseas. Beginning summer 2011, Boren awardees will have the opportunity to enroll in domestic university-based summer intensive courses in the targeted languages. The summer U.S. programs will be followed by intensive language and culture study programs during the fall semester at specific language centers in Mali (Bambara), Tanzania (Swahili), Nigeria (Yoruba), and South Africa (Zulu). The program administrator for this initiative is the American Councils for International Education.

Thirty Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans will be awarded in 2011 on the basis of a single national competition.

Each fellowship supports up to two years of graduate study – in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program – in the United States.
Each award is for up to $25,000 in maintenance grants and up to $20,000 in tuition support for each year of graduate study supported, a total of as much as $90,000.
The deadline for submission of completed applications is November 1, 2010.
To be eligible, you must be:

A New American (a green card holder or naturalized citizen if born abroad; a child of naturalized citizens if born in this country).
Not yet 31 years old, as of the application deadline.
A college senior or holder of a bachelor's degree.
Not beyond your second year – if already enrolled -- in the graduate degree program for which you request support.

Selection criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment.
The program values a commitment to the constitution and the bill of rights.
The program promotes a strong sense of community among fellows and alumni through fall conferences for fellows and numerous events for fellows and alumni held throughout the country.
The top 84 applicants will be designated "finalists" and will be asked to appear for interviews in New York City or Los Angeles in mid-January of 2011. Reasonable expenses will be covered by the Fellowship Program.
The 30 fellowship winners, selected from among the 84 finalists, will be announced in February of 2011.

Whitaker International Award For Bioengineers - Application now open

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce the opening of the 2011-2012 Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program competition, with a January 24, 2011 deadline. The Whitaker International Program provides funding for biomedical engineers/bioengineers to conduct a field-relevant activity abroad.

Program Overview

The Whitaker International Program is a competitive grant that sends emerging leaders in biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) overseas to increase international collaboration in the field. The Whitaker Program was funded by The Whitaker Foundation (now closed), and is administered by the Institute of International Education.

Whitaker International Program grants are awarded based on an activity/project proposal that is relevant to biomedical engineering. We hope to offer about 50 grants annually, but only the highest-quality applicants are awarded. In the last three competitions, 15, 20 and 35 grants have been awarded.

We are looking for at least 150 qualified applications this year, so all students who are even thinking of this type of option are encouraged to apply.

Awards have included research in heart blood flow, improved prosthetic leg design, and development of affordable oral cancer screening tools. Projects occur worldwide, including the UK, Chile, Denmark, India, South Africa, and many more.

Types of Grants

The Whitaker International Program has two categories

· Fellows - Graduate-level applicants, from graduating seniors through current PhD students. Fellows receive a stipend for one year, and are eligible for tuition reimbursement.

· Scholars - Post-doctoral applicants, who recently received their PhD. Scholar awards can be for as little as one academic semester or as long as two years of funding, depending on their needs. Second year funding is contingent upon demonstration of progress made during the first year.

The United States Department of State is pleased to announce the upcoming scholarship competition for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2011.

The selection process will be administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) with awards approved by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The CLS Program is administered by CAORC and the American Councils for International Education.

Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks each summer.

Levels available for each language are as follows:

Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, or Urdu: Beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
Arabic or Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
Chinese, Japanese, or Russian: Intermediate or advanced level.

Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply critical language skills in future professional careers.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Canada's Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are part of a prestigious new program to attract and develop the world's best and brightest postdoctoral researchers in Canada.

The new fellowships will be valued at CAD$70,000 per year (taxable) for two years. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to apply. The program will be delivered by the three federal granting agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). CIHR will administer the program on behalf of all three agencies. Unlike the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, candidates are not required to be nominated first by a Canadian institution and recommended by the institution to the federal granting agencies for an award.

Candidates for a Banting Fellowship must demonstrate, beyond the excellence of their research, synergy between their research program and their host institution. As such, applications must be completed in full collaboration with the host institution. The deadline for candidates to submit a complete electronic application, including referee assessments, is November 3, 2010. International applicants must hold their fellowships at a Canadian institution. Canadian applicants who completed their degree at a Canadian institution may hold their fellowship at a Canadian or foreign institution.

American University of Cairo Scholarships

The AUC Exchange Program in Cairo, Egypt is open to eligible Georgia Tech students who have completed at least 2 semesters of undergraduate college study and have maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA. Courses taken at the American University of Cairo can count toward your Georgia Tech degree program.

AUC offers two scholarships for Study Abroad students:

1. Hermann F. Eilts International Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in tribute to Hermann F. Eilts, an AUC trustee and former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Eilts played an integral role in Arab-American relations during his 32-year tenure with the U.S. Foreign Service. He was a negotiator on the Camp David peace accords and one of the State Department's first Middle East specialists. Through diplomacy and education, Eilts worked tirelessly to bridge political divides and increase cultural understanding between the United States and the Arab world.

To be eligible, a student must be accepted to AUC's study abroad program, have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, maintain full-time status, and register for at least one political science, Middle East studies, or history course each semester of attendance at AUC.

To apply, please write a 1500 word essay on the following topic: "How will my experience at The American University in Cairo impact my future career plans and broaden my appreciation of Arab culture?" This essay should be emailed to Wesley Clark at wclark@aucnyo.edu or mailed to his attention in the New York office. The award received may be applied to tuition, fees, and on-campus housing.

2. The Simpson Scholarship in Egyptology

The Simpson Scholarship is a $2500.00 award for one semester to be used toward tuition or living expenses. The scholarship is designed for students who wish to increase their knowledge and familiarity with ancient Egypt at The American University in Cairo. Students must enroll in at least three Egyptology courses.

Up to five scholarships are awarded annually, for one semester each. To apply, please send a 1500 word essay about why you want to study Egyptology at AUC, and include a reference to three Egyptology courses for which you wish to register. Anne Wexler Scholarship for Australian-American Public Policy Studies

Prestigious new Masters Scholarship for 2011 for up to Aus$140,000 for up to two years for research or study in Australia towards a Masters degree.

The aim of the Anne Wexler Scholarships is to grow Australian-American educational linkages by building the network of public policy experts and to encourage ongoing policy exchange between both countries. U.S. postgraduate students with strong academic credentials and leadership potential can apply to undertake a Master's degree in Australia in an area that supports the late Mrs Wexler's bi-national interests in the fields of public policy. These may include key areas such as health, sustainability, energy, climate change, regional security, political science, history or governmental relations. The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS), the leading resource and research center for analysis and assessment of the German-American relationship in an evolving Europe and changing world, is pleased to announce the DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship Program. The program is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to AICGS, which is located in Washington, DC, for stays of two months each. Fellowships include a monthly stipend of up to $4,725, depending on the seniority of the applicant, transportation to and from Washington, and office space at the Institute.

AICGS is now accepting applications for the next round of DAAD fellowships. The application deadline for spring 2011 (January - June 2011) is

DAAD/AICGS Research Fellows will be expected to produce a short analytical essay that will be published on the AICGS website and distributed via the Institute's bimonthly email newsletter. The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government's internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to undertake study, research and professional development abroad.

The Endeavour Postgraduate Awards cover up to two years for a master's degree and 3.5 years for a PhD.

US citizens (as well as citizens from other eligible countries) are invited to apply for the Endeavour Postgraduate Awards by 31 July 2010 for the 2011 academic year. Diversity Abroad is pleased to announce the launch of a new scholarship aimed at increasing non-traditional students participation in education abroad in the Asia/Pacific region. Diversity Abroad, in partnership with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad and The Foundation for Asia Pacific Education will offer $1,000 scholarships for undergraduate students to study abroad in the Asia/Pacific region during summer, fall and spring terms.

The scholarship is open to students at community colleges as well as at four-year institutions regardless of which institution or provider they use to pursue education abroad in the region. The MASDAR Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi is pleased to announce full scholarships to highly qualified graduate students from around the world for its Fall 2010 intake.

The MASDAR Institute is the centerpiece of the MASDAR Initiative, a landmark program by the government of Abu Dhabi to establish an entirely new economic sector dedicated to alternative and sustainable energy. The MASDAR Institute is a private, not-for-profit, independent, research-driven institute developed with the support and cooperation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT provides assistance in recruitment of faculty members and senior administrative staff and the provision of course curriculum, amongst other matters. The Institute is located inside the world's first carbon neutral, zero waste Masdar City, which will be powered solely by alternative energy, mainly solar energy. Eighty-eight students from 22 countries were admitted into the Fall 2009 intake, all on full scholarships.

The Institute offers MSc programs, and in fall 2010 is planning to start PhD programs in science and engineering disciplines, with a focus on advanced energy and sustainable technologies. Georgia Tech may select one student to participate in the Presidential Fellows Program. This non-resident program offers 75 select undergraduates and graduate students a year-long opportunity to study the American Presidency and public policy-making process. Fellows participate in a fall and spring leadership conference in Washington, DC and discuss national issues with Presidential scholars and are briefed by public policy experts and senior government officials.

Fellows undertake an original research project on an aspect of the modern Presidency and write a 15-page paper. They also write two essays that are considered for publication in the annual anthology of the 20 best essays. Eligibility:

Strong academic credentials, interest in the institution of the Presidency, and interest in public service.

International Researcha nd Education in Engineering Program

The 2010 International Research and Education in Engineering (IREE) Program , sponsored by the National Science Foundation and organized by Purdue University, is now accepting applications for the 2010 grant cycle. IREE 2010 awardees will receive a stipend (US$4,000 for graduate students and US$3,000 for undergraduate students) to conduct engineering-related research in China from May - August 2010 . Additionally, grant awardees will receive allowances for: an orientation program; travel to and housing/meals in China; plus a re-entry program. The 50 students (20 undergraduate and 30 graduate students) that receive the IREE award will spend 10-12 weeks working on frontier engineering research projects in university, industry, or government labs in China.

Applicants must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing as degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate students at a U.S. institution of higher education. They must also be able to express both a demonstrated interest in a field of engineering related research, and a desire to work in China. Finally, strong preference will be given to United States citizens or nationals, or permanent residents of the United States. In addition, women, underrepresented groups, and students from schools with limited research opportunities are particularly encouraged to apply.

The IREE Program was initiated by the National Science Foundation (ENG/EEC) in 2006 to promote enhancement of global competency of 21st century engineering professionals, development of collaborations with engineering researchers abroad, and providing students with opportunities to experience the life and culture of a another country. It enables early-career researchers in the U.S. to gain international research experience and perspective. IREE also seeks to enhance U.S. innovation in both research and education, as well as enable connections between the research programs of NSF's divisions with the education of students.

The scholarship I applied for was the University of Sheffield in America Study Abroad Scholarship. I won £500 for submitting some information about me (name, home university, major, etc.) as well as a short essay about my personal and academic interests online.

I plan on taking classes on circuits, medieval history, deformable bodies, philosophy, and electromagnetism to fulfill some of the requirements for my major, but I'm also looking forward for the opportunity to become involved around campus and see what college education is like in another country. Of course, some may say that the UK is one of the most similar countries when compared to the United States (and I do hope to do some travel around the rest of Europe), but I definitely think there is a lot of interesting history and culture present just within England.

Overall, I am excited for the experience of going to a completely different continent (I've never been overseas before) and seeing how nations around the world interact with one another while maintaining their own unique heritage.

The Ministry of Education of Spain is pleased to announce over 1,500 grants for American and Canadian participants to serve as teaching assistants in Spain, sharing their native knowledge of the English or French language and North American culture in Spanish public K-12 schools. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree by the end of the academic year preceding the start of the program or be an upcoming junior or senior student at their university, or be a university graduate. A program of United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program will offer intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2010. The on-line application for CLS Program awards is now available, and the deadline to apply will be December 18, 2009. The selection process will be administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) with awards approved by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The CLS Program will be administered by CAORC and the American Councils for International Education.

Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. Levels available for each language are as follows:

Arabic, Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu: Beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
Chinese, Japanese, Russian: Intermediate or advanced level.

The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers. CBYX for Young Professionals Fellowship Accepting Applications

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is currently accepting applications from students and recent graduates who are interested in living, studying, and interning in Germany on a full-year, funded fellowship. CBYX is sponsored by the US and German governments for applicants in all career fields between the ages of 18-24, and does not require any prior German language knowledge! Applicants in business, vocational, technical, engineering, scientific, and agricultural fields are especially encouraged to apply.

The CBYX for Young Professionals fellowship includes:

Scholarships for study abroad in Japan

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 20 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Spring 2010. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded 950 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Most recently, 68 students from colleges and universities in 29 states received scholarships for study in Japan beginning in the Fall 2009 semester.

The deadline for applications for Spring 2010 scholarships is October 6, 2009. Applicants will be notified of the results by November 25. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese.

Spring 2010 programs are those beginning between January and April 2010 and continuing for at least three months. (Summer program participants are not eligible for Bridging Scholarships.) Students planning to study abroad in Japan beginning in Fall 2010 or for the 2010-2011 academic year should apply in April 2010 for the Fall 2010 scholarships.

Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars

The Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars program is a competitive scholarship program that allows undergraduates to conduct independent research in the laboratories of the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering & Bioscience.

The program serves to develop the next generation of leading bioengineering and bioscience researchers by providing a comprehensive research experience for an entire year. The Scholars are mentored by graduate students and postdocs in state-of-the-art laboratories and will develop their own research project. The Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars Program runs from January to
December 2010.

Program Outline

*$1,450 stipend for spring semester work 12+ hrs/week
*$3,000 stipend for summer session work 40+ hrs/week
*$1,450 stipend for fall semester work 12+ hrs/week

Applicant Eligibility Criteria

*Students with at least 45 credit hours as of January 2010, majoring in engineering or the sciences with an interest in bioengineering and/or bioscience research
*A commitment beginning in January of 2010 and concluding at the end of December 2010
*Official university transcript
*Two letters of recommendation
*Students currently enrolled full time at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College or another metro Atlanta area college or university.

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board has announced grant opportunities for student-led service-learning projects that address five issues: drivers’ safety, access to higher education/closing the achievement gap, financial literacy, natural/societal disaster preparedness, and environmental responsibility. Congratulations Gilman Scholarship Recipients!

Congratulations to Cari Cistola and Alexander Johnson for winning the Fall 2009 cycle of the nationally competitive Gilman International Scholarship! Both students will be spending a semester or year in their respective countries on GT Exchange Programs.

Cari, an Economics and International Affairs major, will be spending her junior year in Moscow, Russia, on the Academy of National Economy Exchange Program. She will be taking classes related to her major, including advanced Russian language coursework. Congratulations!

Alex is a senior in Electrical Engineering and plans to continue his course of study as he spends the Fall 2009 in Cairo, Egypt at the American University of Cairo. He also plans to improve his Arabic language skills.

The Gilman International Scholarship is available for students who are currently receiving a Federal Pell Grant, and who plan to study abroad for a semester or year. GT Lorraine Scholarships & Fellowships

The Bill Sayle Memorial Scholarship offers students interested in studying in the GT Lorraine campus in Metz, France a chance at four, $500 scholarships for the Fall and Spring semesters. This will be an ongoing scholarship program.

There are also ten, $2000 fellowships from ALCOA Incorporated, available for Spring 2010 only. This fellowship is open to minority students and women.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowships - Info Session

Tuesday, June 16, there will be an information session about NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. The session will be at 11:00, Piedmont Room, Student Center.

Seniors, first year graduate students, and first semester second year graduate students are eligible to apply.

Fellowships are for three years, $30,000 per year plus $10,500 per year to cover tuition and $1000 international conference travel fund.

Information will be presented by the GT Fellowship Office and by an NSF reviewer. Students at any level are encouraged to attend.

Bridging Scholarship for study in Japan

The Bridging Scholarship program will award up to 50 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Fall 2009. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation.

The deadline for applications is April 6, 2009. Applicants will be notified of the results by May 30. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are
administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese.

In addition, Morgan Stanley will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan during the 2009-2010 academic year and who have an interest in economics and international finance. Applicants must submit an essay on one of several designated public-policy topics together with an application for the Bridging Scholarship program.

Fall 2009 programs are those beginning between August and October 2009 and continuing for at least three months. (Summer program participants are not eligible for Bridging Scholarships.) Students planning to study abroad in Japan beginning after January 1, 2010, should apply in October 2009 for the Spring 2010 scholarships.

The DAAD Center for German & European Studies at the University of Minnesota invites applications to the 9th Trans-Atlantic Summer Institute in European Studies (TASI). The Institute will bring together 12 German or other European, and 12 North American graduate students for an intensive two-week seminar in Krakow, Poland. Cooperating partners are the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management and the Institute of Sociology at the Jagiellonian University. The 2009 topic is "Transitions in Central and Eastern Europe: Culture, Society, Politics." The Institute will be taught by a multi-disciplinary team of faculty: Francis Harvey (Geography; University of Minnesota), Tom Wolfe (History; University of Minnesota) and Annamaria Orla-Bukowska (Sociology; Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland). The Institute is intended for advanced graduate students from all recognized institutions of higher education.

Bobby Jones Fellowship Due Monday (2/16)

The Bobby Jones Fellowship is open to Georgia Tech students who are pursuing or will pursue graduate studies in selected areas of Physics, Electrical, and Computer Engineering. The fellowship provides one GT student the opportunity to earn a one-year non-thesis Master of Science degree at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland – a 600-year-old research university, voted Scottish University of the Year for 2008/2009, and one of the top 10 universities in the UK. The recipient will receive $35,000 to cover fees and living expenses while enrolled at the University of St. Andrews.

Gilman Scholarship winner returns from semester in London

A junior in ChBE, Jessica Kamal recently returned from spending the fall term on the UCL Exchange Program in London, England. To fund her term abroad, Jessica applied for and was awarded the Gilman Scholarship, a national competition which provides up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to use toward study abroad. Applicants must receiving federal Pell Grant funding to be eligible.
